Take Progesterone Cream and avoid Xenoestrogens (Environmental Estrogens) for Treatment and Relief from Migraine Headaches

Summary for Migraine Headache Cure

migraine headaches sufferers find relief by taking progesterone cream and avoiding estrogen intake. Xenoestrogens (known as foreign estrogens and environmental estrogens) pretend to be estrogen. Xenoestrogens may come in the form of birth control pills, synthetic hormone replacement, laundry detergent, soap, shampoo and cosmetics. Look up the side effects of too much synthetic estrogen in any PDR (Physician's Desk Reference) and you will find that one of the side effects is a migraine headache.

Phytoestrogens or Natural Plant Estrogens can also make migraine headaches worse. For instance, I had one patient that was doing well for three years on progesterone cream. She had reduced her moderate monthly migraine to nothing with the periodic use of progesterone cream. She then called me complaining that the "progesterone cream did not work any more" and the migraine headaches were back. After talking with her, I found that she recently switched to a lavender soap, and that is when the migraine headaches started again. She stopped her lavender soap, and the "progesterone cream began to work again" and the migraine headaches disappeared. Progesterone Cream opposes the effect of estrogen and resensitizes the body's estrogen receptors back to normal.

Take Progesterone

  • Use a progesterone cream with 500-1000 mg of natural progesterone per ounce.
  • For the first 2-3 months use one or two ounces of progesterone cream per month on days 12 though 26 where day 1 is the first day of your period; this is about one half (1/2) or one (1) teaspoon per day. This comes out to 60-70 mg/day of Natural Progesterone.
  • Then use one half or one ounce of cream per month on days 12 though 26 where day 1 is the first day of your period; this is about one quarter (1/4) or one half (1/2) teaspoon per day. This comes out to 30-35 mg/day of Natural Progesterone. Many patients start the progesterone cream 5 days before they know the migraine headache will start. They slowly increase the dose of progesterone reaching a high dose when the migraine headache is supposed to appear. You may rub it on your temples. If you have a progesterone oil, you may put it under your tongue. Many times this sublingual dose will immediately relieve the migraine headache. Listen to your body and use the amount that works for you.
  • Rub the cream on any part of the body that has good circulation before bed time - beasts, neck, chest, legs, arms, thighs, soles of the feet, or back.
  • Use a saliva test to monitor progesterone levels; not a blood test. Usually a saliva hormone test is NOT necessary unless you are one of the 1% that did not absorb the progesterone cream well through the skin.
  • If you have a lot of body fat, the progesterone must be soaked up by the body fat first before getting to your body. You may need a higher dose to get rid of the Migraine Headache.

Take Sublingual (under the tongue) Progesterone for a Sudden Migraine Headache

  • The progesterone must be in a vegetable oil or vitamin E base.
  • DO NOT USE progesterone cream under the tongue because of toxic ingredients.

Avoid Estrogens

Take Vitamins

  • Vitamin E 600 IU/day before bedtime
  • Magnesium 300 mg/day
  • Vitamin B6 50 mg/day

Avoid Estrogens

  • Cut the dosage of hormone replacement estrogen immediately to 1/2 of your normal dose while taking progesterone.
  • DISCONTINUE estrogen supplements altogether over a period of 3-6 months.
  • DO NOT stop estrogen suddenly or HOT FLASHES will be the result.
  • Do not use birth control pills; use a condom without spermicide instead.

Avoid Xenoestrogens

Very Important

  • HOT PLASTIC in contact with hot food is VERY BAD!!! Use glass or ceramics whenever possible to store food and water. Heat up your food using a glass or ceramic bowl covered with dish. When plastic is heated, it diffuses very rapidly into food.
  • Use a simple detergent with less chemicals; Nature Clean is a good choice for both laundry detergent and dish washing detergent. Detergent cannot be fully rinsed from your clothes and is easily absorbed through the skin. This is an easy change to make. Laundry detergent is very important. Anything put on the skin is 10 times greater in potency than what you put in the mouth. Anything put in the mouth is 90% inactivated by the liver, but anything put on the skin goes directly into the body.
  • Use Condoms without spermicide for Birth control instead of Birth Control Pills. Use Natural Progesterone instead of HRT.
  • In general, the hormones taken orally are first pass metabolized by the liver 80%-90%. However, when these hormones are applied to the skin, the hormones are directly absorbed by the body. Thus, any skin dose is 10 times that of an oral dose. The vast majority of skin lotions and creams use the parabens as a preservative. Phenoxyethanol commonly used as a preservative is also an estrogen mimic. Avoid them at all costs. Instead apply a vegetable oil right after a shower to hydrate the skin and lock in the moisture. Check your natural progesterone cream and make sure it does not contain Methyl Paraben, Propyl Paraben, Butyl Paraben, or any of the Parabens.
  • Avoid any shampoos that purposely contain estrogens or that are "rich in hormones".

The very important changes to make are do NOT eat food or drink that has been with HOT plastic .  Change your laundry detergent, no fabric softener, no dryer sheets, change your lotions, soaps, shampoos, and makeup to avoid xenoestrogens. No pesticides or herbicides. No shampoos that are "rich in hormones". Avoid Coffee. All of these chemicals cause an increase in intensity of migraine headaches because they are homonally active. These chemicals mimic estrogen.

Secondary Importance

  • Avoid Synthetic Chemicals - Read Healthy Living in a Toxic World by Cynthia Fincher Ph.D. See books.
  • Simple Soap is a safe choice for shampoo and a body soap.
  • Use natural pest control not pesticides.
  • Don't use herbicides; use a cup of salt in a gallon of vinegar.
  • Buy hormone free meats to eat.
  • Buy "Organic" produce, produce grown without pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizer or hormones.

Avoid Selected Dangerous Phytoestrogens

  • Avoid Coffee, Decaffeinated Coffee, and Beer.
  • Avoid Sunflower Seeds, Red Clover Tea, Camomille Tea, Alfalfa Sprouts, Queen Anne's lace (wild carrot), Pomegranate, Fennel,Licorice, Red Clover, Yucca, Hops (Beer) and Motherwort.
  • Avoid Phytoestrogens that block and interfere with the action of Natural Progesterone. Avoid Bloodroot, Ocotillo, Mandrake, Oregano, Damiana, Pennyroyal, Verbenna, Nutmeg, Tumeric, Yucca, Thyme, Calamus rt., Red Clover, Goldenseal, Licorice, Mistletoe, Cumin, Fennel, Camomille, Cloves.

Readjust your Thyroid Medication

  • Too much estrogen (Estrogen Dominance) causes hypothyroid by making the thyroid receptor less sensitive to thyroid hormone. When xenoestrogens and phytoestrogens are eliminated and progesterone cream is used the thyroid receptor wakes up and the sensitivity goes back to normal. Cut back the dosage of your thyroid medication, if your T3 and T4 is normal by laboratory measurements.
  • After 2-3 months of progesterone use, it may be possible to completely eliminate your thyroid supplements.

Do Not Take Synthetic Progestins

  • Do not take synthetic progestins such as Megestrol and Provera.
  • These synthetic progestins will compete with progesterone receptor binding sites and compete with progesterone rendering progesterone useless.
  • Immediately lower the dose by 1/2 and lower it more the second month. By the third month the progestin may be completely stopped.

If No effect is felt after 2 months of Use - Take a saliva progesterone test

  • 5%-10% of patients do NOT absorb progesterone well through the skin.
  • Oral progesterone or sublingual progesterone (prescription) may be taken 200-400 mg/day or Maca 4 capsules/day (each capsule approx. 500 mg) instead.
  • Make sure the progesterone cream is formulated correctly.
  • Avoid xenoestrogens.
